Moisturiser is a skincare product designed to hydrate, nourish, and protect your skin. It works by helping to lock in moisture and strengthen your skin barrier, preventing dryness and dehydration.
A good moisturiser contains ingredients that:
If your skin still feels dry after moisturising, it could be due to dehydration, a weakened skin barrier, or using the wrong type of moisturiser for your skin.
Here are some common reasons:
1. Your skin is dehydrated (not just dry).
Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. If your skin feels tight or dull, you may need hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin underneath your moisturiser.
2. Your moisturiser isn’t rich enough.
Lightweight formulas may not provide enough nourishment for very dry skin. A cream with ceramides, nourishing oils, or shea butter can help seal in moisture more effectively.
3. Your skin barrier is compromised.
Over-exfoliating, harsh cleansers, or strong active ingredients can weaken your barrier, causing moisture to escape. Barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide can help restore balance.
4. You’re not applying it correctly.
Moisturiser works best when applied to slightly damp skin, helping to lock in hydration.
